Let's start from the very beginning, when all of the students have just arrived at Hope's Peak Academy. Each get an introduction of sorts, explaining who they are and what their "Ultimate" talent is. Right off the bat, Kirigiri is the most different out of all of them. When she is introduced Naegi notes very quickly that he couldn't actually find a lot of information about her online, and being in person isn't much different. She doesn't reveal her Ultimate Talent and she doesn't reveal a lot of information about her personal life. (Just as a note, Naegi Makoto will be mentioned a lot in this personality section because you are ultimately seeing the game through his eyes, and Kirigiri ended up growing the closest to him as far as friends go.)

Upon that very same meeting with her, the first conclusion you can come to is that she is cold, distant, and stoic. Quite frankly that is not off the mark at all. Naegi says something to the effect that it seems like she is wearing an unbreakable iron mask. She is quite a mysterious character, and continues to be for quite a long time. The way she speaks can be harsh, blunt, and frankly not the kindest. When she sets out to make a point, she will make it no matter the consequence. If she has something to say about another character she will also not hesitate to come out and say it no matter the cost. That doesn't really happen as often as one may think, though. Kirigiri tends to say very little in the face of whatever is going on. It's a lot more of actions are louder than words with her.

An important fact about Kirigiri is that she prefers to act alone. Often going off by herself for days at a time, or sticking around a crime scene with enough distance that she can come up with her own conclusions. She is also the one who more often than not comes to examine the dead bodies, as if she is completely desensitized to the sight of them. She is usually the only one willing to touch and examine the bodies for the causes of death and the clues. She also has a knack for seeing things in a crime scene that are not obvious to the normal eye. Though when you take a step back, it should be completely obvious what her special talent is. Calm at the crime scene, having enough intuition to conduct experiments that no one else would have thought of? It makes sense that later in the game, Kirigiri reveals that she discovered that her Ultimate talent was being a detective and that she came from a long line of detectives. It was a family business of sorts. She used her skill as a detective unknowingly in the game to help push Naegi towards the correct answers and to help him also see the clues that no one else was seeing.

Unfortunately, due to Kirigiri's aloofness and her overall cold attitude, she causes a lot of distrust between the other students. Though she is well aware of this and well aware of the sacrifices she has to make in order to obtain the information that everyone needed to get out of the hellish game they were all involved in. She also claims to her fellow students that she believes that she has amnesia, which will be touched on just a little bit later as that does become very important.

Kirigiri states that her and her father are on rocky terms, and that her main motive of even coming to Hope's Peak was so that she could ultimately cut ties with him. I believe that a lot of things that have shaped Kirigiri were experiences with her father leaving her at a young age and the experiences and trials that she faced as an amateur detective. A large part of Kirigiri's wariness of getting close to people revolves around an unknown incident when she was an amateur detective, leaving her hands badly burned and to the point where she wears custom fitted gloves to cover up the scarring. She even says herself that getting close to someone can only lead to your feelings becoming a factor, which she doesn't want. This also includes her having a hard time trusting people, and if she does it's a dubious type of trust or a situational type of trust.

There are some cases where Kirigiri can become emotionally overwhelmed. As mentioned before, Kirigiri's main goal was to cut ties with her father, and yet every single time he is mentioned by someone in the game (namely alter-ego or Naegi), she gets extremely emotional. Not an outward kind of emotion, more like an inward emotion where she closes herself off really fast. Something you likely don't want to do is break her trust once you have gained it. An instance where this happened was in Chapter Four, when Naegi refused to tell Kirigiri something that he had been suspecting about Oogami. Her trust was broken, and she actually ended up not speaking to him for the majority of the chapter.

It turns out that in the last trial, everything Kirigiri had been saying about her having amnesia had been the case for all of them. It turns out they all lost two entire years of memories and Kirgiri just a little bit more. The mastermind thought that Kirigiri being completely aware of her ability would be a damper on the Mastermind's plan to kill the majority of them. So going back, that explains why she couldn't have possibly introduced her talent to anyone during the initial meeting.

Continuing on with the last trial, Kirigiri really shows a huge example of how much she had grow from her initial meeting. She also had to have hope reinstated in her by Naegi, and she was the one to ultimately reveal that Naegi's true title was "Ultimate Hope" rather than "Ultimate Lucky Student". She says that she realized that she didn't have to understand her father to be able to know what he was thinking and that her father wouldn't have wanted her to throw Naegi under the bus just to survive.

"You said that despair is contagious. But, hope is just the same. Can’t you tell by looking at us?”
